Berlin Cherry Blossom History

Cherry blossoms aren’t native to the German capital, so how did they get there? It all started with a generous gesture from Japan. In 1990, the Japanese television station TV-Asahi launched a fundraising campaign to provide Germany with cherry blossom trees in celebration of the country’s reunification. They raised around 140,000,000 yen, which funded the donation of over 9,000 trees, with Berlin receiving a large share.

But why cherry blossoms? Known as sakura in Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize renewal and new beginnings – an ideal way to mark a new era of peace in Germany.

Many of the trees are planted in areas around Berlin’s former ‘death strip,’ where countless lives were lost while attempting to escape during the war. Today, these trees stand as a symbol of beauty and peace, offering a stark contrast to the area’s painful history.

Berlin Cherry Blossom dates 2025

Berlin boasts a wonderful variety of cherry blossom trees, making it tricky to pinpoint the exact dates they’ll be in bloom. Factors like weather and temperature play a big role in determining when the blossoms will appear each year.

Generally, you can expect the first blooms from late March to early April, with peak blossom season lasting around two to three weeks. If the weather is cooler, the trees may hold off until late April, but your best bet for catching them at their finest is usually in the first two weeks of April.

Because there’s a great variety of cherry blossoms you should be able to get at least a glimpse of a pink blossom if you’re visiting anytime through April, you might just not catch the full show!

Where to see the Berlin Cherry Blossom

Gärten der Welt – Gardens of the World

The Gardens of the World is a must-visit for nature and plant lovers, and there’s no better time to go than during cherry blossom season! The site features 9 international gardens, 11 themed gardens (including, of course, Japanese cherry blossoms), and even water gardens. In spring, it even hosts Berlin’s Cherry Blossom Festival! These are by far some of the best-kept cherry blossoms Berlin has to offer and you get the added bonus of having them in the beautiful setting of the Gardens of the World.

Oberbaumbrücke

Another fantastic spot to catch the Berlin cherry blossom is around the iconic Oberbaumbrücke. Right before the bridge, you’ll find Zierkirschen am Oberbaum, a small cluster of cherry trees that make for a great photo opportunity—especially if you can frame the blossoms with the bridge in the background.

For even more cherry blossom views, cross the bridge and head down to the water at May-Ayim-Ufer. Additional trees are lining the river bank here. With the bridge behind them, it makes for another great photo spot!

Schwedter Straße

Head north on Schwedter Straße toward the Schwedter Steg bridge and you’ll find more of the Berlin cherry blossom. This end of the street is lined with trees creating a beautiful pink walkway.

Korsörer Straße

Just before you reach Schwedter Steg on Schwedter Straße turn right onto Korsörer Straße. Cherry blossoms line either side of the street with the cobbled road and colourful buildings making for the perfect picture!

Bornholmer Straße

One of the most historically significant spots on your Berlin cherry blossom journey is Bornholmer Straße. A former border strip during the Berlin Wall era, East Berliners first crossed West here after travel restrictions eased. Just nearby on Bösebrücke bridge, a memorial stone marks this pivotal moment in history.

As for cherry blossoms, this spot is especially popular due to its historical significance. To see them in full bloom, head under Bösebrücke onto Norweger Straße and follow the path. Over 200 trees line the way, adding a beautiful contrast to this landmark of Berlin’s past.

Landschaftspark Nord-Ost

With over 1,300 cherry blossom trees, Landschaftspark is easily one of the best places to experience Berlin’s cherry blossom. Despite having the largest amount of cherry blossom trees in the city, it remains somewhat under the radar due to its location outside the city centre. While it still draws visitors, it’s often a little quieter than the more well-known central spots.

Lohmühlenbrücke – Lohmühlen Bridge

Along the Landwehrkanal around the Lohmühlenbrücke, you’ll find more of the Berlin cherry blossom. It’s also a meaningful location – the memorial stone for the Sakura Campaign, which celebrated Berlin’s reunification with thousands of donated cherry trees, can be found here. A perfect spot to enjoy the blossoms while soaking in a bit of history!

Mauerdenkmal an der Kiefholzstraße – Wall memorial on Kiefholzstraße

Another spot of historical significance where you can see the Berlin cherry blossom is along Kiefholzstraße. There are a few cherry blossoms lining the street and as you walk along. You’ll also come across a memorial site featuring a wall with a child’s figure cut out of it. The site was erected to honour two children who were fatally shot by a border guard during the war.

Volkspark am Weinberg (Weinbergpark)

Another fantastic spot to catch the Berlin cherry blossom is Volkspark am Weinberg. While cherry trees are scattered throughout the park, the best display is around the small lake at its centre. On a clear day, the sight of the blossoms reflecting in the water is beautiful – a perfect springtime scene!

TV-Asahi-Kirschblütenallee

With a walkway covered by a canopy of pink blossoms stretching over 2km, TV-Asahi-Kirschblütenallee is another magical spot to experience the Berlin cherry blossom. Over 1,000 trees line the path, and when they’re in full bloom, it really does look like something straight out of a fairytale. The cherry blossom avenue here is definitely one of the best ways to see the trees!

Zionskirche – Zion Church

Head along Zionskirchstraße towards Zionskirche to be treated to more of the Berlin cherry blossom. The street is lined either side with cherry blossom trees meaning you’re able to get a great photo with the church in the middle.

Glienicker Brücke – Glienicke Bridge

Although this spot leans more towards Potsdam, it’s still worth a stop if you’re heading that way! The Glienicke Bridge, famously known as the ‘Bridge of Spies,’ connects Potsdam with Berlin’s Wannsee district and once served as the site where Warsaw Pact agents were exchanged for Western spies during the Cold War.

In 1990, the first cherry trees in Berlin were planted right by the bridge and make for a great photo with the bridge in the background.
