Carlsplatzmarkt history

Where Munich has Viktualienmarkt, Dusseldorf has Carlsplatz. While it may not be quite on the same scale, it’s still a market of epic proportions and quality – and one of my favourite spots in the city!

Carlsplatz has just over 60 stalls selling everything you could ever dream of from a market. From fresh pasta and pastries to flowers and falafel alongside a huge variety of fruit and vegetables, there’s a luxurious spread on offer here.

Carlsplatz, originally Karlplatz, is the oldest market in Dusseldorf and is named after Elector Karl Theodor. Developed in the late 18th century, the Carlsplatz site has a rich history. Traditionally, markets were held in front of the town hall, but in 1808, Carlsplatz was granted permission to host the city’s four-week-long annual fairs. In 1910, Carlsplatz established its weekly market, which continued until 1940 when an air raid shelter was built underneath the site. The market returned in 1951 and has since continued to grow and develop into what it is today.

Lots of the stalls ran here are family businesses that have been operating for decades. The whole market has a very warm and inviting vibe to it, I can’t recommend visiting it enough!

Food and drink

As well as fresh produce to take away there are also a lot of great spots to grab a meal at Carlspalts. Here are just some of the great spots to visit:

  • Berliner Ecke: One of the best spots in the city for traditional currywurst.
  • Fischhaus – Fish House: 100% the place to stop by if you love seafood. They serve lots of different fresh fish sandwiches as well as prawns, fish soup and scamp among other things.
  • Casa Cortilla: Incredible fresh pasta and antipasti dishes. A popular stall among locals so it does get busy!
  • Delikatessen Franken: Specialises in food from the Franconia region including schnitzel, potato pancakes (delicious!) and lots of different salads. They have a huge variety and everything is freshly made.
  • Dauser: Lots of different soup and goulash dishes, it has a real home-cooked feel to it. Another popular spot so be sure to get there early!
