Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom – Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market

Backdropped by the iconic Cologne Cathedral, the Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom represents the heart of the city’s festivities. This ultimate traditional German Christmas market features over 130 stalls selling handmade treasures, plenty of food stalls offering festive treats, and a variety of live shows and performances. The crowning jewel of this market is the 25-meter-high fir tree standing in the middle, beautifully blanketed by over 50,000 lights. For anyone exploring the Cologne Christmas markets, the Cologne Cathedral market is a must-visit destination.

Nikolausdorf – Nicholas’ Village Christmas Market

Pretty timbered stalls blanketed in twinkling lights stood before the medieval Hahnen Gate, the Nikolausdorf is one of the best Cologne Christmas markets if you’re looking for somewhere plucked straight from a storybook. They project festive images onto the gate, adding to the charm, while a mechanical elk serenades visitors with Christmas carols. You can even meet Santa Claus! Of course, the usual handmade gifts and delicious food also fill this cosy Christmas market.

This market is especially great if you’re visiting Cologne with Children. There are lots of children’s activities as well as special programmes for them to get involved in!

Heinzels Wintermärchen – House Elves’ Winter Fairytale Christmas Market

The largest of the Cologne Christmas markets is Heinzels, named after the story of the Heinzelmännchen. These gnome-like creatures were said to do all the work for the people of Cologne overnight, making the inhabitants lazy. The gnomes were eventually driven away when a seamstress’s wife tried to lure them out of hiding, offending them in the process. However, they return to the city every year for this epic market.

Set in Cologne’s alter markt in the old town, Heinzels features over 100 stalls, an incredible open-air ice rink, a Ferris wheel, and even a curling rink. Brimming with festive cheer, this magical market is full of incredible decorations and scenery pieces creating a true Christmas wonderland.

Weihnachtsmarkt im Stadtgarten – Stadtgarten Christmas market

If you’re looking for something unique, the Stadtgarten Christmas market is a must-visit. This market stands out with its local vendors offering their own products, and the stalls rotate weekly, ensuring you’ll find something new and exclusive each time you visit. The market is also well known for having the best red and white mulled wine in the city, making it the perfect place to indulge in some holiday cheer!

Markt der Engel – Market of Angels

Known for its elegant glowing star decorations, the Market of Angels is one of the prettiest Cologne Christmas markets. Elegant angels and sparkling light adorn the trees and stores giving it its heavenly ambiance. True to its name there are even real-life angels wandering through the crowds. You’ll find traditional German food and all kinds of beautiful handmade trinkets in the stalls around here.

Advent Village Market

One of Cologne’s smaller Christmas markets, the Advent Village, stands out with its impressive centrepiece: a giant traditional Christmas pyramid that towers above the stalls. Here, food and drink are available underneath this iconic structure. Its smaller size makes the Advent Village an ideal destination if you’re seeking a quieter atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of larger markets.

Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt – Cologne Harbour Christmas Market

Set on the banks of the Rhine, the Harbor Christmas Market is the most nautical of the Cologne Christmas markets. A nearly 50-meter-high Ferris wheel offers incredible views of the city, while on the ground, you can wander around pirate-themed stalls, including a bar shaped like a giant ship. Pirates roam the market as food stalls serve up various fish delicacies.

This is a great market to visit if you’re looking for something a bit different and it’s located right next to the chocolate museum so you can grab a sweet treat when you’re done!

Summary

There have been Cologne Christmas markets since 1820 and the festivities have only grown since then. The city overflows with festive food, handmade gifts, and merry celebrations, creating an atmosphere so delightful that even those who claim not to be in the festive mood can’t help but feel a little jolly here!
