Christopher Street Day Parade

The highlight of Cologne Pride is the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Parade, also known as the CSD Demonstration, – a spectacular event that takes over the city with colour and energy. If you’ve ever experienced Cologne Karneval, you’ll know this city takes its street parades seriously! Expect the city centre to be awash with rainbow colours as thousands of people dress in their most vibrant outfits and line the streets to celebrate.

The parade typically sees over 50,000 participants, either marching on foot or riding on one of around 100 decorated trucks. It usually kicks off around 11:30 AM at Deutzer Brücke before weaving its way through the city centre.

The History of Cologne Pride

Pride events have been a part of Cologne’s history since the early 1980s, with the ColognePride organisation officially forming in 1991 and hosting its first event that same year. Since then, a pride festival has taken place every year in the city, growing into one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations.

But why is it called ‘Christopher Street Day’? The name honours the Stonewall Riots, which took place in several areas around New York including on Christopher Street. On June 28th, 1969, after repeated police raids on LGBTQ+ bars and establishments, the community fought back, sparking an uprising that became a defining moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Today, events are held worldwide to commemorate this historic movement, and Cologne Gay Pride is the city’s way of paying tribute to it.
