- What’s Bonn famous for? Bonn is well known as the birthplace of Beethoven as well as being the home of Haribo.
- Is Bonn worth visiting for tourists? Absolutely! It’s not as crowded as some of the bigger cities and is still full of history and places to explore. There are plenty of interesting places to visit in Bonn!
- Is Bonn a walkable city? I found Bonn to be easily walkable, it’s not too big so you won’t be walking far between attractions. The city does have a great bus and subway network which will also get you to most places.
See the beautiful Cherry Blossoms
The cherry blossoms in Bonn are some of the best-known in all of Germany. Come early spring, entire streets burst into varying shades of pink as the blossoms show off their stunning colours. It’s like walking through a fairytale, with a canopy of pink petals above you as you wander through the city! If you’re visiting in late March, this is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Bonn!
Visit history at Sterntor City Gate
A quick, but worthwhile, stop on your city tour, Sterntor is a must-see for anyone exploring Bonn. As one of the last remnants of the city’s medieval fortifications, it offers a glimpse into Bonn’s past. While it’s not the original gate—this version is a replica—it does incorporate pieces of the original structure. An interesting piece of history and definitely one to add to your list of things to do in Bonn!
Walk through royal gardens at Poppelsdorf Palace
With its striking yellow facade and fairytale-like charm, Poppelsdorf Palace is one of Bonn’s most beloved landmarks. Acquired by the University of Bonn in 1818, it now houses an impressive mineralogical museum and is surrounded by its amazing botanical gardens. While the palace interiors aren’t open to visitors, the gardens alone make it one of the best free things to do in Bonn!

I absolutely love botanical gardens, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint! Wander through prehistoric landscapes in the dinosaur garden, explore the arid beauty of the desert house, and discover where your food comes from in the crop gardens. Best of all? It’s completely free to visit!

If you’re a museum lover, checking out Museum Mile has to be one of the best things to do in Bonn! largest museum association in Europe, it’s made up of 5 different sites covering a range of topics. Here’s a rundown of what each one offers:

The House of History (Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is one of Bonn’s most popular museums, offering great exhibitions that bring Germany’s post-war history to life. Covering the period from the end of World War II to the present day, its permanent collection features over 7,000 items while its ever-changing temporary exhibitions explore specific themes and ideas in greater depth.
Kunstmuseum Bonn – Bonn Museum of Modern Art
A must-visit for art lovers, the Kunstmuseum Bonn showcases an interesting blend of classical modernism and post-1945 German art. Do some calculations at the Arithmeum
Got time to squeeze in one more museum? A visit to the Arithmeum is definitely one of the more unusual things to do in Bonn—but who says maths has to be boring? This museum is home to over 10,000 exhibits, featuring everything from early calculating devices and computers to mathematical books through the ages. While it might sound a little drab, the museum is presented in a modern and engaging setting, making it a lot more exciting than you’d expect. Don’t be too quick to cross it off your list of places to visit!
Wander through Marktplatz – Market Square
The heart of any great city is its charming little market square, and Bonn is no exception. This place was buzzing with people when I went, with the farmers’ market in full swing. But there’s more to see here than just the market! At one end of the square stands the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), a stunning white Rococo building that’s impossible to miss. In the centre, you’ll find the Marktfontäne (Market Fountain), a historic landmark dating back to 1777.
Grab something sweet at the Haribo Factory Outlet
I’m a huge Haribo fan, so I’ll be honest—the Haribo Factory Outlet was the main thing that drew me to Bonn. Imagine a massive store packed with discounted Haribo from around the world, including flavours you’ve probably never even heard of. Sounds like paradise, right? Oh, and it gets even better—there’s a huge Haribo pick ‘n’ mix and pretty much every kind of Haribo merch you could dream of! This is 100% at the top of my list of things to do in Bonn.
Haribo Store
The Factory Outlet store is just a short subway ride from Bonn, but if you’re after something closer, there’s also a Haribo store right in the city. Since Haribo was founded in Bonn, it’s no surprise the brand has such a huge presence here! While the city store doesn’t have quite as many varieties as the Factory Outlet, you’ll still find plenty of unique flavours, a big pick ‘n’ mix, and loads of Haribo merch to choose from!
Visit the Bonner Münster – Bonn Minster
An icon of the city, Bonn Minster is one of its most famous and striking landmarks. Completed in 1248—the very same year construction began on Cologne Cathedral—this historic church is steeped in fascinating history. Just outside, you’ll find two large head statues, honouring the Christian officers who are believed to have been martyred on this very site. A walk to the Minster has to be on your list of things to do in Bonn!
Grab a drink at Stadtbefestigung Alter Zoll – Old Customs fortifications
Another remnant of Bonn’s former defences, Alter Zoll is a must-visit if you’re looking for things to do in Bonn. Perched on the banks of the Rhine, this historic spot was once home to the customs collection point for the Rhine toll before becoming part of the city’s official fortifications—with two cannons still standing as a reminder of its past. From the top, you’ll be treated to a fantastic view of the city, and if you’re visiting in summer, there’s even a beer garden—the perfect spot to relax in the sun!

Looking for more amazing views of the city? Then Godesburg Castle should be your next stop in Bonn. Perched high on a hill, construction began in 1210, but the original castle met a dramatic end when it was destroyed by siege in 1583 by Catholic Bavarian troops. Thankfully, it was rebuilt in 1959 and now boasts a fancy restaurant and unreal panoramas of the surrounding area from the top!
Relax in the Japanischer Garten – Japanese Gardens
On the banks of the Rhine, a little slice of Japan awaits. This Japanese garden was originally established by the Japanese government as a gesture of goodwill following the International Garden Festival in Bonn. You’ll find ornate lanterns, waterfalls, flowing rivers, winding stone pathways, and of course, Japanese koi ponds. The traditional Japanese tea pavilion adds to the authenticity and holds occasional tea ceremonies. If you’re looking for a quiet escape from the city, even just for a moment, this hidden gem is well worth adding to your list of things to do in Bonn!

If you’re a Beethoven fan, you’re in luck! As the birthplace of the legendary composer, Bonn is packed with things to see and do for those looking to learn more about his life. Here are the top places to check out:
Beethoven House
First up, Beethoven House – the very building where Beethoven was born! Today, it’s home to a great museum dedicated to his life and is even ranked among Germany’s top tourist attractions. Inside, you’ll find an incredible collection of exhibits including family portraits, Beethoven’s own musical instruments, and even his writing desk!
Beethovenhalle – Beethoven Hall
Home to the Beethoven Orchester, the Beethovenhalle is a concert hall dedicated to keeping the composer’s music alive through spectacular performances. It also plays a key role in the famous Beethovenfest, opening and closing the festival—yes, there’s an entire festival dedicated to Beethoven! If you love live classical music, this is an absolute must on your list of things to do in Bonn!
Beethoven Monument
You’ve seen his birthplace, you’ve listened to his music, now it’s time to visit his monument! Standing proudly in Münsterplatz, the monument which depicts a bronze statue of Beethoven was unveiled on his 75th birthday—though sadly, he never got to see it himself.

Prefer to explore Bonn by bus? You’re in luck! The CityTour Bus takes you to all the must-see spots, with free audio commentary so you can plug your headphones in and soak up some history—or just sit back and watch the city roll by.
Best of all? It’s a hop-on, hop-off tour, meaning you can jump off whenever something catches your eye and explore at your own pace!
Feed the wild animals at Die Waldau – Wildpark Venusberg
If you’re looking to get out into nature, Wildpark Venusberg is the perfect place to escape the city. Just a short bus ride from the centre, this 7-hectare forest offers a peaceful retreat. The highlight for me? The animals! The park has a few fenced enclosures home to wild boar, red deer, and fallow deer, which you can even feed through dispensers. There are also plenty of trails to explore, plus the House of Nature, where you’ll find exhibits on local wildlife and ecology. Best of all? It’s completely free. There’s also a pretty big play park here, making it also one of the best activities to do in Bonn with kids!
Search for the dragon at Drachenburg Castle
Okay, this one’s not technically in Bonn, but it’s close enough to earn a spot on this list. Picture a beautiful fairytale castle perched on the side of a hill, with the ruins of another castle sitting at its peak. Oh, and did I mention the legendary dragon said to have lived here?
Drachenburg Castle is nothing short of incredible – it’s easily one of my favourite castles in Germany. If you’ve got a spare day while in Bonn, this is an unquestionable must-visit!

There’s such a great variety of things to do in Bonn Germany, whatever your interests. My personal picks have to be the botanical gardens at Poppelsodrf Palace and the Haribo stores. It’s a great little city to visit and is well the travel to, even if only for a day trip!
